3 Important Tips for your Shopify SEO Strategy

by Jason / Posted

So you have a newly setup Shopify website. It’s created with superb functionality, a custom design that makes even the largest ecommerce giants weep and product photos so lush that you’d be more than happy to buy them from yourself. But, we all know in reality you can’t do that, instead you need visitors to your website to start increasing your revenue.

This is where marketing becomes the key to your long term success as an online retailer. By applying the correct search engine optimisation (SEO) to your ecommerce store you will be head and shoulders above many other competitors who have yet to consider that to get visitors to their website they need a successful marketing strategy.

At Shopify Builder we have worked on a portfolio of websites and apply our marketing knowledge on a daily basis to help online stores rank higher in search engines.

Here are our 5 top Shopify SEO tips provided by our experts.

#1 Think about your brand second

When writing title tags for your pages place your brand at the end. This may sound counter-intuitive but it’s logical for small companies. Think of it like this;

You’re a new website and you sell a variety of running shoes and trainers. Let’s call your brand “Soulful Joggers”. After searching for the keyword “running shoes” in the mighty Google it’s evident that over 90% of the first page listings are brands that are well established. These brands include Asics, JD Sports and Amazon.

At further inspection we also notice that 70% of first page results do not include their brand at the beginning of their meta title tag. Take a look below if you’re not sure what that is.

Shopify SEO: Optimizing Your Ttitle Tag

What does this mean? It means more well established brands can rank for any keyword they wish quicker and easier than you can so jumping into a brand war if you’re not well established is not necessarily the best thing to do.

It also means you should focus on keywords you want to rank for at the beginning of your title tag. There’s a reason for this, Google weight keywords at the beginning of your title tag more than at the end, read number 3 of this article for more evidence. Considering more people are probably searching “running shoes” more than “Soulful Joggers” you can optimize your title tag to represent this fact.

But won’t you find it difficult to compete for this highly search volume keyword? Yes, you will. That’s why at the start of your title tag you should define the keyword more, for example, “Adidas Running Shoes| Size 9 UK Running Trainers | Soulful Joggers”. What you have there is a title tag that defines the product, the type, the location and your brand. Now you’re starting to target visitors with the main keyword but also hitting niche searches that are likely to convert PLUS you still define your brand.

#2 Don’t just build a blog, use it!

There are many Shopify stores that don’t have a blog setup on their website. This part of the site tends to be oft neglected but could be the secret to your Shopify marketing success. You see, the blog works its magic in several ways.

  • It keeps your website fresh and up to date. Just one blog post per week of helpful information can be enough to let search engines know your website is still alive and kicking.
  • You have knowledge of your industry and products, or you should do. Write about it! Search engines love website owners who know their stuff AND help their customers. You blog is the perfect platform to do this.
  • There may be keywords you want to rank for that you have no place to include on your website. You blog allows you to apply the perfect Shopify SEO strategy by including these keywords naturally in your informative blog posts.

Here are 6 ingredients to a good ecommerce blog that will provide a few more ideas, including connecting social media efforts with your blog. Think about how you can help the reader and share your passion. If you do this you’re more likely to gain subscribers to your blog that could eventually turn into a converted loyal customer.

#3 Links, the pathway to Shopify SEO success

If the Internet had a backbone it would be something called backlinks. These backlinks are pathways from one webpage to another and without any path, both users and search engine bots have nowhere to go.

Your Shopify site needs backlinks to boost its authority which in turn helps you rank for more competitive keywords. But you shouldn’t acquire any old backlinks – you need backlinks pointing to your website that are from relevant industry related websites preferably with a strong domain authority of their own.

If you’re a new ecommerce website you have a great opportunity to boost yourself with some strong backlinks to your website. Whether this is guest posting on other people’s websites, adding yourself to the correct directories, building relationships with blogger review websites for your products or other Shopify SEO strategies you need a plan of action.

Your products and your blog posts should be good enough that people want to link to them so consider the type of website copy you have on every page, and like point number two above, consider your blogging strategy.
