8 Ways to Get the Most out of your Designer

The design of your Shopify site is imperative for your business’s success. A Shopify site is not just the entry point and introduction to your business but also the shop floor, the customer service, the persuasion to buy, the check out and the aftercare.
Website design is a combination of functionality, content and aesthetic design; and you need a high standard of all three to be taken seriously in the competitive E-Commerce world.
Arguably, the trickiest part of these three to get spot on is design, as design is so conceptual. If you hire a Shopify Partner to build your Shopify store for you, you will have a dedicated designer to create your logo, banners and design of the website. The toughest part is communicating to your designer exactly what you want and have them bring it to life in precisely the way you envisioned.
With this in mind, we have come up with a few points to help you nail your communication with your designer and how to get the most out of them:
1. Build a Good Relationship
A good relationship with your designer is important. This is obviously a two sided collaboration, and the better you and your designer get along, the quicker the web building process will be, and the happier the environment and liaison between you both will be.
2. Clarity is Important
Throughout the whole process, it’s really important to clearly define what you’re aiming to achieve and want created. If you haven’t got a creative brain but have a vague idea of what you want, that’s absolutely fine as long as you outline other aspects of the project such as your target audience/your brand and your product. Designers can work with little or a lot, as long as the end goal is clear and surrounding knowledge has all been passed on.
3. You’re Paying for Ideas as well as Photoshop Skills
Rather than just using your designer as a translator between your mind and the computer screen, use them for their ideas too. Whilst designers are fantastic at using design software, they are artists, and have a passion for creativity. In the majority of cases, your designer will have studied design to a degree level (or higher) and are churning out great designs and ideas on a daily basis – why not tap into this creativity, and pursue ideas beyond your wildest imagination?
4. Take Time to Construct your Feedback
The better your feedback, the better the output. We suggest that rather than giving small chunks of feedback at sporadic times after a quick glance, take some time to construct all inclusive, cohesive feedback. This will streamline the web design process as designers tend to work better with fuller feedback rather than small snippets.
5. Have an Open Mind and be Flexible
Your designer may have not have duplicated the image in your mind’s
eye but is what they’ve done maybe even better? Client and designer don’t always necessarily agree on what looks best (although designers really do try to always get it right first time!) but just as your designer will do with you, sometimes you may need to consider a compromise or meeting in the middle. You may then find that what they’ve come up with is far better than you could ever have anticipated; that’s their aim anyway.
6. Time Management
Managing your designer’s time is important. Often, a timetable or schedule will be implemented so that payment is easy to monitor, to ensure that your designer isn’t spending unprecedented hours laboring over your designs and so that both parties are aware of the time limit set on a project. As a client, it can sometimes be hard to keep on top of your designer’s changes but it is important to stick to the timeline and reply when possible to keep things ticking on.
7. Set Realistic Deadlines for Both you and your Designer
When setting a deadline for your designer, you need to make sure that it’s plausible for you and your designer. Things to consider are: how busy you are and how often you will be able to give feedback for changes and if you keep requesting changes, that will also impact the deadline date and finishing of the project.
8. Communication is Key
When working with your designer to create a stunning finished product, the more communication you have with each other, the better the outcome will be.
